Ph.D. - Educational Statistics & Measurement

General Objectives: The doctoral program in Educational Statistics and Measurement has as its goal the development of specialists in the fields of statistics, measurement, and evaluation. Doctoral students are exposed to the underlying mathematical models that serve as the basis for research and evaluation in education and psychology. Students become proficient in the use of statistical computer programs that are widely used to analyze research data. During the course of study, the Statistics Laboratory provides students with opportunities for consulting with researchers from education, the behavioral and social sciences, and the biological sciences.

Employment Perspective: Graduates of the Educational Statistics and Measurement specialty have been employed by universities, state education agencies, corporations, private and public research centers, testing companies, the military, and public school systems.

Summary of Doctoral Degree Requirements: A selection and review committee screens applicants on the basis of prior graduate work, grade point average, standardized test scores (Graduate Record Examination), letters of recommendation, and availability of faculty to chair the student's committee. Minimum requirements for admission are:

  1. GRE-Quantitative score of 500 or better,
  2. two courses in graduate level quantitative methods in education or the behavioral sciences,
  3. evidence of a commitment to education, and
  4. satisfactory completion of Calculus I (MATH 150-4), Introduction to Linear Algebra (MATH 221-3), Introduction to Computer Programming (CS 202-3), or equivalent courses.


Admission: Application to the Educational Statistics and Measurement program requires submission of the following:

  1. Application for Admission to Graduate Study
  2. Doctoral Application Form
  3. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results
  4. Official transcripts from all universities attended
  5. A minimum of three letters of recommendation
  6. Application fee of $45.00


GRE scores and all transcripts must be submitted directly to the Department. Applicants may not personally submit the GRE score or transcripts.
